Description

BANBURY HORSE FAIR SP4540NW (East side) 6/76 Row of 6 chest tombs along the wall approx. 28m. to 10m. W of portico, Church of St. Mary GV II

Six chest tombs. C18. Ironstone. Most have panelled sides, corner balusters and moulded ledger slabs. Chest tomb nearest the road bears inscription: 'Sacred to the memory of William Golby who died June 5th 1741 aged 37 years and of Ann his wife who died June 1750 aged 62 years'. Chest tomb fifth from road bears inscription: ' in memory of John Gun (?) who died 16th June 1797 aged 69'. Group of 6 chest tombs sited in a prominent position on the right of the main path to the church.
