Description
This is a row of 29 headstones located along the north wall of the Church of St. Mary, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The headstones are made of ironstone and are arranged in four groups.
The first group consists of seven headstones, some with segmentally headed tops, most of which are boldly carved with designs featuring cartouches, cherub heads, scrolls, flowers, and fruit. The second group has six headstones, primarily featuring bold carvings of scrolls, wreaths, cherub heads, and floral decorations. One of these is dated 1680 and includes a winged head and wreath.
The third group contains seven headstones, again mostly with bold carvings, showcasing cartouches, panels, skulls, and cherub heads, with scrolled or cambered tops. This group includes a double headstone that features open pages of a book. The fourth group consists of nine headstones that are tall and plain with cambered heads, except for one that is boldly carved with a cartouche and cherub's head. These headstones are included for their group value.
