Description

Oak Cottage is a house that likely dates from the 16th century and early to mid-17th century. It is built from coursed squared marlstone and features wooden lintels, topped with a concrete plain-tile roof and brick stacks. The house has a two-unit plan with a cross-wing and stands two storeys tall.

The taller main range has a four-panel door located at the extreme left and two wood-mullioned windows on the first floor, which have leaded glazing. One window has three lights with splayed mullions, while the other has four lights with ovolo mullions. There is also a blocked window to the left of centre, which was likely added later. On the ground floor, there is a four-light window with ovolo mullions and a three-light 18th-century casement. The steep-pitched roof features stacks to the left of each bay.

The gable end of the cross-wing has two renewed windows and a two-light 18th-century casement. The right side wall has leaded 18th-century casements, and additional wood-mullioned windows can be found at the rear of the main range.

Inside, the main range includes a restored central inglenook fireplace, with stop-chamfered and moulded joists supported by heavy stop-chamfered crossbeams. The first floor has intersecting stop-chamfered beams and a butt-purlin roof. The cross-wing features heavy joists and a crossbeam, along with a small cruck truss, which may be housed into the crossbeam, although one blade of the truss has been partly removed. The cruck principals intersect at the apex.
