Description

Muswell Hill Manor is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century and early to mid-17th century, with significant restoration in the 20th century. It features timber framing on a rubble and brick base, with renewed plaster infill, and narrow brick in irregular bond. The roof is covered with old plain tiles and has brick stacks.

The building is a three-bay hall house that has been extended to form a T-plan, with a second wing added. It has two storeys plus an attic, and the hall range is built into a hill, possibly dating to the early 16th century. This section retains some original heavy framing and includes a four-light wood-mullioned gable window, while other restored mullioned windows have up to nine lights. The late 16th-century wing has two storeys of framing that is now pargetted in an original pattern, sitting on a brick semi-basement. A two-window brick wing projects from it, with a rubble and brick base, and features three-light casements with segmental arches on the first floor. The roofs are half hipped, except for the brick wing which has a tall gable stack, and the hall range has a tall clustered stack from the late 16th or early 17th century that rises out of the roof slope.

Inside, the restored single-bay open hall has a clasped-purlin roof with two rows of curved windbraces. There is a massive inserted stack with wide brick arches that have mostly been renewed, and heavy joists in the floored sections. The attic joists in both the hall range and the wing extend into stop-chamfered lateral beams. The brick wing features a renewed Tudor-arched stone fireplace with an original moulded-brick back, as well as a complete moulded-brick fireplace with a depressed arch.
