Description
The South Newington War Memorial is a limestone structure featuring a Latin cross with moulded cross-arms that rises from a tall, tapering, octagonal shaft. At the base of the cross, there is a crown encircling the foot. The cross shaft is set on a square plinth with a chamfered top, which rests on a square single-stepped base.
On the front face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads "THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US 1914 – 1918." The names of ten local servicemen who died in the First World War are incised into the sides of the plinth.
This memorial is located in the southern part of the churchyard of the Grade I-listed Church of St Peter ad Vincula.
