Description
The Banbury War Memorial is located at the intersection of footpaths in the southeastern part of Banbury People’s Park, at the center of a paved area surrounded by flower beds. This tall memorial is made of Portland stone and features a wheel-head cross on a tapering shaft. The shaft rises from a square, tapering plinth, which stands on a two-stepped octagonal base. The top of the lower step of the base has a slightly projecting shelf for placing floral tributes.
The front face of the plinth has an inscription that reads "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE 325 MEN AND 1 WOMAN OF THE BOROUGH OF BANBURY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES." The rear face has the inscription "LEST WE FORGET THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Additionally, a third face of the plinth bears the inscription "ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE 1939 – 1945 WAR." All inscriptions are incised and painted with black enamel.
The memorial is enclosed by paving and ornamental railings that form an octagonal enclosure.
