Description

Wheelwright Cottage and the cottage abutting to the left are two buildings located on Main Street in North Newington. The Wheelwright Cottage dates from the early 17th century, while the adjoining cottage is from the mid-18th century, both with later alterations.

Wheelwright Cottage is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched thatched roof, which is hipped on the right side over a workshop. It has brick ridge stacks and a two-unit plan plus a workshop, standing as a single storey with an attic. The cottage has a two-window attic range, with an off-centre entrance to the left that has a chamfered four-centred head and a 20th-century door. To the right of the entrance, there is a blocked stone-framed window and another window above the doorway, both under the thatch. The ground floor includes a 20th-century window on the left with a wooden lintel, a three-light metal casement window in a wooden frame to the right, another 20th-century window, and a three-light metal casement window in the workshop, all featuring wooden lintels. The attic has two half-dormers with two- and three-light casements, complete with wrought-iron casement fasteners, springs, and a wooden lintel. There is also a fire plaque present.

The cottage abutting to the left is also made of coursed ironstone rubble and has a similarly steeply pitched thatched roof. It has a one-unit plan and is a single storey with an attic, featuring a one-window range. The entrance is to the left and includes a four-panelled door with a wooden lintel and hood. Both the ground and attic floors have two-light wooden casements with wooden lintels. The interiors of both buildings have not been inspected.
