Description
The Town Hall in Deddington was rebuilt in 1806, likely incorporating parts of an earlier 17th-century structure. It features a combination of brick with marlstone dressings and rendered timber-framing, topped with a Welsh-slate roof and a brick gable stack. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of three by two bays and is situated on an island site with two storeys.
The ground floor showcases an arcade of segmental arches supported by square brick piers with stone bases and impost blocks; the northern end of the arcade is enclosed, while the rest remains open. The upper floor is rendered and features a renewed band, with various windows: a pair of 2-light windows in the south gable wall, a 3-light window to the north with a similar window in the gable, and two 3-light casements in the east wall. The roof is steeply pitched.
Inside, there are intersecting chamfered beams and lateral beams that are morticed for braces, which relate to the earlier timber-framed structure and appear to be original. The first-floor walls and roof show no visible work earlier than the 19th century. The council chamber contains early 19th-century joinery and benches.
