Description
The Unicorn Hotel is an inn that dates from the mid-17th century and was remodeled and extended in the late 18th to early 19th century. It features rendered stone and brick walls and a Welsh-slate roof with brick gable stacks. The building has a two-unit through-passage plan that extends to the rear and stands three storeys tall.
The front has three windows and a wide central four-panel door with a flat canopy above. The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows. The outer bays are highlighted by three-storey rectangular bay windows; the ground and first floors have renewed five-light casements, while the second floor has architraved 12-pane sashes that only face the front. The right bay window has been partly extended to the left, with the ground floor window expanded to eight lights, but the first floor has a blind section, which features a seated figure of a unicorn on the flat roof. The projecting boxed eaves create a cornice effect around the bay windows. The shallow-pitched roof slopes lower at the rear above a brick extension. A stone wing extends from the right side and has 16-pane sash windows.
Inside, there are 17th-century stop-chamfered joists and a spine beam.
