Description

Dragon House is a house dating from the 17th century, substantially re-fronted in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh-slate roof with stone-and-brick end stacks. The house is arranged in an L-shaped plan, with a regular three-window front. The doorway, with a 20th-century door and flat canopy, is positioned to the left of centre. The front has small 12-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars, each set within an ashlar flat arch with projecting keyblocks, connected by a storeyband. The stacks have ashlar plinths; the left stack retains an ashlar shaft raised in brick. At the rear, there is a three-light stone mullioned window, now partly converted into a doorway, and a return wing with casement windows. Inside, a large 17th-century open fireplace features a Tudor-arched head formed in the chamfered bressumer. A winder stair runs alongside the chimneybreast, rising to the attics. The roof is a butt-purlin design with cambered collars on the trusses. There is also an 18th-century arched display niche with fluted pilasters and serpentine shelves.
