Description

Brown Thatch is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, remodelled in the 19th century. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble, with a 20th-century tile roof and a stone ridge stack. The house has a 2-unit plan and two storeys plus an attic. It exhibits a Tudor revival style. A gabled 2-storey entrance porch has an ogee-headed doorway, and small ogee-headed windows on its sides, with an upturned hoodmould above the doorway. A 2-light traceried stone mullioned window is located on the first floor of the porch. The front elevation has two 2-light casements set within stone surrounds, each with a hood mould and label stops. Inside, there is a wooden winder stair, chamfered beams and joists with run-out stops, a chamfered bressumer, and an inglenook fireplace with a 20th-century hearth. The house is an interesting example of 19th-century estate details incorporated into an earlier structure.
