Description

Bloxham School is a complex of buildings founded in 1854, incorporating an earlier farmhouse which forms the core of part of the present school. Subsequent additions were designed by G.E. Street in 1864, 1869, and 1871, with the Egerton Library added in 1894.

The early school buildings are visible in a range of structures facing south. These buildings are constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble with plain tile roofs and stone stacks. A five-window range features an entrance on the left side; to the right are two two-light casements, two sash windows with keystoned flat arches, and a bay window. The first floor has five sash windows, and the attic has three dormers dated 1928, each featuring a hipped tiled roof and two-light casement. Flat bands delineate both floors.

The north block, originally the main school building fronting the Banbury Road, stands on the north side of a grass quadrangle. Constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble with a plain tile roof and two stone stacks, it is in the Gothic Revival style and has a six-window range to the ground floor. A doorway features a pointed arched head with a hood mould and head stops, flanked by two buttresses. The first floor has four paired two-light windows. Three three-light gabled attic dormers are present, all with stone relieving arches.

Crake House, formerly the schoolroom, is also constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble with a plain tile roof. It has a seven-window range to the ground floor and traceried windows on all floors. Three irregularly spaced gable-fronted attic dormers feature ornamental ridge tiles. Most window dressings are of limestone, with two stone end stacks and one lateral stack.

The dining hall displays a change in style towards square-headed, traceried windows with Bath Stone dressings. It is built of regular coursed ironstone rubble topped with a plain tile roof and features stone end stacks. The hall is three storeys high with a five-window range; the ground floor features a 1:3:1 window arrangement, accentuated by two buttresses between stone mullioned and transomed windows with trefoiled, cusped heads. The second floor has single- and two-light windows with trefoiled heads. The attic features three three-light and one two-light stone mullioned windows, along with ornamental ridge tiles. All openings have relieving arches.

The chapel is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble with plain tile roofs and stone copings; it sits at first floor level, with classrooms below. The Decorated style chapel contains two- and three-light trefoil-headed windows on the ground floor, buttresses, and four two-light windows on the chapel floor. A large, traceried east window has five lights, while an octagonal west turret features gabled lucarnes and stone copings with kneelers.

The Egerton Library, added to the right of the original farmhouse, is built from regular coursed ironstone rubble with a plain tile roof and houses a library on the ground floor and a chapel above. It contains four lancets on the ground floor and three on the chapel floor, along with stone copings. Bloxham School is part of the Society of Woodard Schools. The interior has not been inspected.
