Description
The cartshed at Temple Mill Farm is a Grade II listed structure dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is built from limestone rubble with red brick piers and arches, topped with slate roofs. The building is single storey and features a three-bay cartshed on the right and a stable with a hayloft above on the left. The stable has red brick cambered arches on brick piers, with the right arch modified in stone. The left-hand forward angle of the stable is rounded, and the right gable has a later stone buttress. The stable door dates from at least the mid 19th century.
Inside, the stable retains a manger, while the cartshed is subdivided by a timber partition that includes a broad, vertically boarded door with metal strap hinges and a timber latch. The hayloft is located in the right-hand bay. The roof structure includes a two-bay queen-post roof with replaced rafters and battens, and a three-bay through-purlin roof on the left, featuring one truss with a collar and another with a tiebeam, all lined with planks.
Historically, Mill Farm has been owned by the Sabin family since around 1800 and operated as a mill until approximately 1960. This cartshed and stable, along with the mill, are key buildings within the farm complex and hold group value.
