Description
This is a school building, now used as a church hall, thought to have been started in the early 1830s but not finished until 1870. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with a hipped slate roof. Chamfered brick dressings appear around the windows and door surrounds.
The rectangular building is aligned east to west and entered from the south, with an entrance porch aligned with the southern elevation. Single-storey outbuildings, dating to the 19th century, are situated to the west and east.
A rectangular copper cupola with louvered openings having round-arched heads and a lead roof rises from the centre of the roof; this originally held the school bell. The south elevation incorporates two pointed-arched windows with timber frames featuring Y-tracery. A pointed-arched door opening with its original boarded door is positioned on the east side. A gabled brick porch, also with its original boarded door, has been added to the west, leading to an attached kitchen and into the former schoolroom. A small, high-level window is present on the north elevation towards the east.
The western porch leads to a narrow kitchen, which lacks original features. The schoolroom itself is a simple space and retains few historic features, including a new timber floor. The chimneybreast has lost its original plain surround, although an opening that once housed a stove remains.
A small outbuilding attached to the west has 20th-century timber boarding on the front and a corrugated iron roof and was not inspected internally. Attached to the east end of the former school building is another outbuilding constructed of coursed limestone with a 19th or early 20th-century king-post roof structure covered in slate. This building features two wide openings, while a third to the east has been partially filled with brick. The building has been altered significantly but appears to have originally been used for vehicles and sheltering animals. The eastern bay has two vestigial pointed-arched openings, possibly formerly providing lavatories for the school.
