Description

Wheatcroft is an inn that has been converted into a house, dating from the early to mid-17th century and 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with wooden lintels and features a Welsh-slate roof with stone and brick gable stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The front of the 18th-century section has two windows and a central doorway, with 12-pane sash windows on the first floor that have stop-chamfered lintels. Below, there are tripartite sashes, one of which has been re-sited.

To the left, a lower 20th-century wing protrudes and includes an earlier subsidiary range. At the rear, there is a large 17th-century wing that extends from the left end of the 18th-century range, retaining some old casements with stop-chamfered lintels and featuring a canted two-storey projection, which was likely once a staircase. The large stack on the rear gable has two diagonal shafts, made of both ashlar and brick.

Inside, the 17th-century range includes stop-chamfered joists and beams, as well as a large open fireplace with canted sides and a heavy bressumer that has bold chamfer-stops. The building was formerly known as The Wheatsheaf Inn. The 20th-century extension is not considered to have special architectural interest.
