Description
Folly Cottage and Lorien are two small houses built in the early 18th century. They are constructed from coursed marlstone rubble and feature wooden lintels, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof and brick stacks. The buildings have one- and two-unit plans and rise to two storeys.
The front of the first house, Lorien, has three windows, with a two-light casement featuring a chamfered lintel on each floor. The entrance to Lorien is located to the right of the windows. Folly Cottage has its entrance between the second and third bays and includes three-light windows on the first floor and two-light windows below, with an additional window on the far right that likely replaced a doorway. All windows have renewed leaded casements and 20th-century lintels. The steep-pitched roof has stacks on both gables and to the left of the second bay.
The interior has not been inspected. The cottages were probably originally single-unit homes, but they may have started as a three-unit house. They are included in the listing for their group value.
