Description

TUNBRIDGE WELLS MOUNT PLEASANT ROAD TQ5839NW 3/10005 Library and Museum II GV Library and museum. Built 1939 but fitted out during the Second World War. Designed by Percy Thomas and Ernest Prestwich after a competition in 1934 and one of a series of municipal buildings. Brown brick with reconstituted stone dressings. Stone coping and band with motto "LIBRARY AND MUSEUM". Two storeys, but front has windows on ground floor only. Eight 30-pane sashes and central tall window incorporating a double door with lotus decoration to side glazing and bas relief frieze above depicting various gods of Olympus, Zeus, Hera, Aphrodite, Athene etc. Interior has large well staircase with stylised Greek key design to cornice.
