Description

The Police Station and Courts were built in 1939, designed by Percy Thomas and Ernest Prestwich following a 1934 competition for a set of municipal buildings. The building is in a Neo-Georgian style, incorporating Moderne details. It is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with Portland stone dressings, and has a flat roof. The two-storey structure has four windows to the front elevation. The ground floor windows are twenty-pane sashes, while the first floor has twenty-pane sashes. A band of lettering reads "COURT AND POLICE STATION". The central doorcase features a semi-circular tympanum decorated with classical figures representing the scales of justice and a motto. The building has a band and plinth. Bronze decoration is present on the fanlight and the doors. The interior staircase is of a similar style to those found in other municipal buildings. The courts were not inspected during the listing process.
