Description
The Assembly Hall, built in 1939 by Percy Thomas and Ernest Prestwich, is located on Crescent Road in Tunbridge Wells. It was designed following a competition in 1934 for a complete set of municipal buildings and features Moderne details. The building is constructed of brown brick with stone coping and a band that reads "ASSEMBLY HALL."
The front of the hall has five bays, with the central three projecting and featuring three narrow windows that have six vertical metal panes adorned with a lotus motif. Above these windows are sculptural stone panels depicting female figures in classical dress, representing Dancing, Drama, and Music. The end bays contain smaller casements with six vertical panes.
On the ground floor, there are five double doors beneath a flat canopy that is ramped up at the sides, complemented by globular lamps on rounded plinths. Inside, the foyer is marked by black full-height columns decorated with gold mosaics and a stylized Greek key design. The staircases are fitted with metal handrails and a marble floor. The auditorium retains its original proscenium featuring rectangular motif decorations, which are echoed in the ceiling of the hall. The interior also includes walnut dado panelling and a balcony.
