Description

The Town Hall, built in 1939, is part of a series of linked municipal buildings designed by Percy Thomas and Ernest Prestwich following a competition in 1934. It features a Neo-Georgian style with "Moderne" details. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, accented with Portland stone dressings, a band below the cornice, and a band above the plinth. It has a flat roof and a symmetrical, splayed shape over two storeys. The central section consists of three bays and includes a raised parapet with a shield and the motto "Do well Doubt not," flanked by giant pilasters. A giant round-headed window with a balcony and stone architrave, along with double doors, is also present. The entrance is approached by two flights of stone steps, which are accompanied by circular planters by the doorcase and rectangular planters by the steps. There is one 20-pane sash window on each side, seven sash windows on the right side elevation, and twelve on the left. Inside, there is a white marble staircase with a black marble plinth and coping, giant stylised pilasters, and gilded stylised Greek Key decoration on the cornice. The original circular and half-cylindrical light fittings are still in place. The Council Chamber features a Greek Key design on the ceiling and balcony, along with a domed vestibule.
