Description
The Gossum headstone, dated 1721, is located approximately 12 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Speldhurst. This headstone commemorates Richard Gossum and is made of upright sandstone, standing about 1.5 meters high. The top of the headstone is shaped and features a carved depiction of the Good Samaritan story, surrounded by scrolls that follow the outline of the head. Below this carving, the inscription is presented in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, detailing the death of Richard Gossum in 1721. The grave also includes a pair of body stones and footstones, with the footstones inscribed with the initials BG and AG.
