Description
This is a row of six headstones located approximately 9 meters south of the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Speldhurst. The headstones date from between 1723 and 1773 and commemorate various members of the Cooke family. Each headstone is an upright sandstone slab, standing between 300 and 600 millimeters high, featuring curvilinear shaped heads and sunken front panels. Some of the headstones are adorned with inscribed hourglasses, crossed arrows, and scrolled ornamentation. The inscriptions are in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. From left to right, the headstones commemorate Elizabeth Cooke (died 1729), Mary (date buried), Ann (died 1723), Samuel (died 1773), Mary (died 1730), and Samuel (date buried).
