Description

Frittenden School is a building from 1845, constructed of red brick and render with a plain tiled roof. It features an open courtyard plan, with the schoolmaster's house located within the courtyard. The schoolmaster's house, which is now used as offices, is one storey high with an attic. It has a central gabled dormer and large gables on both sides, adorned with applied jettying, framing, pierced bargeboards, and pendants. There are moulded stacks on both sides, and the projecting moulded gables extend to the left and right returns. The ground floor has two sash windows and a central boarded door set in a gabled porch.

Classroom wings extend to the left and right, featuring jettying on the gable ends, pierced bargeboards with pendants, and shaped lights at the gable apexes. The left wing has a projecting triangular-shaped mullioned bay, while the right wing contains large sash windows. On the left return, there are three moulded stone cross windows with labels, chinoiserie patterned glazing, and an intrusive mid-20th century metal casement, along with a boarded door.

The playground front is symmetrical, showcasing two large gables and a smaller central gable, all with pierced, moulded, and pendant bargeboards. There are four wooden casements and two three-light transomed casements on either side of the central glazed gabled porch. The return gables also feature large kite-shaped glazed areas. This building represents quite advanced stylistic work for its date, particularly in Kent.
