Description
FRITTENDEN THE STREET TQ 8040-8140 (north west side) 14/62 Frittenden School GV II School. 1845. Red brick and render with plain tiled roof. Open courtyard plan with schoolmaster's house set within courtyard. Schoolmaster's house (now offices) of 1 storey and attic with gabled dormer to centre and large gables to left and to right with applied jettying, framing, pierced bargeboards and pendants. Moulded stacks to left and to right. Projecting moulded gables to left and right returns. Two sashes on ground floor and central boarded door in gabled porch. Classroom wings projecting to left and right, with jettying to gable ends, pierced bargeboards with pendants, shaped lights in gable apex. Projecting triangular-shaped mullioned bay to left wing, large sashes to right hand wing. Three moulded stone cross windows with labels to left return, with chinoiserie patterned glazing and intrusive mid C20 metal casement, boarded door. Playground front: symmetrical, with 2 large and smaller central gables with pierced, moulded and pendant bargeboards. Four wooden casements and two 3 light transomed casements either side of central glazed gabled porch. The return gables have in addition to the moulded woodwork large kite-shaped glazed areas in the gables. In Kent especially this is quite advanced work stylisti- cally for its date.
