Description
Herschels Dairy is an 18th-century house located on Hastings Road in Hawkhurst. The building is constructed of red brick, with a 20th-century addition on the upper floor made from poorer quality brick. It features a blend of Classical and Gothick styles. The main elevation is single storey, while the return sides are two storeys.
The structure has a plinth and a parapet, with chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The central section projects forward and includes pilasters and an open brick pediment. This area contains a large semi-circular arched recess with a traceried lunette above a boarded door, flanked by two Y-traceried glazing bar sash windows, all set within pointed arched surrounds. Smaller arched recesses on either side also feature similar sash windows. The left return has two arches with similar sashes, while the right return has an added porch and a glazing bar sash.
The upper sections of the walls give the building an unfortunate box-like appearance, with inappropriate casements on the first floors of the return elevations. The building likely predates Sir John Herschel's purchase of the nearby Collingwood House in 1840, after whom it is named.
