Description

The carthouse, located approximately 40 meters west of Chalket Farmhouse, is a 17th-century structure that has been significantly rebuilt in the 19th century and is currently used as a garage. It features stretcher bond red brick construction on a base of large coursed blocks of sandstone, topped with a peg-tile roof.

The carthouse is oriented roughly north-south and includes a large doorway at the north end, while a smaller doorway at the south end has been blocked. The long sides of the building are divided into three bays by brick piers, with the walls between slightly recessed. The roof is half-hipped at the north end, which is weatherboarded and has a modern metal pivoting garage door. The south end has a hipped roof and includes two timber uprights that appear to have once served as doorway jambs, suggesting that a doorway was originally raised above the footings for loading carts directly.

Inside, the carthouse consists of three bays. The northern truss is from the 17th century and features a tie-beam truss with clasped side purlins and queen struts, while the southern truss is similar but likely a 19th-century reproduction.

This cartshed is a charming building that is associated with the nearby Chalket Farmhouse.
