Description

The Men of Pembury War Memorial is a limestone cenotaph that was unveiled in 1921 and altered in 1949. It is located on Hastings Road in Pembury, near the village green and the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade II* listed building. The memorial is surrounded by low hedging and soft planting.

The monument is made of limestone and features a large square platform that is accessed by four steps on its northern side. At the center, a plinth supports a cenotaph designed in the shape of a pylon. The top of the pylon has a gabled cornice detail on the northern side, with the cornice extending around the entire pylon. Beneath the gabled cornice, there is a carved relief of a Celtic wheel cross.

The top of the pylon displays the inscription '1914 - 1919' in inset lead lettering. Below this, a raised panel bears the inscription 'DUTY HONOUR SELF-SACRIFICE,' and underneath is a stone plaque that commemorates those who fell in the First World War. Below this plaque is the inscription '1939 - 1945,' along with a second stone plaque honoring those who fell in the Second World War. The sides and rear of the monument are left plain.
