Description

This is a mid-19th century and late 19th century house and shop, located on High Street, Pembury. The front facade is constructed of whitewashed Flemish bond brick, while the sides and rear are tile-hung to the first floor. The roof is covered with peg tiles and has brick stacks and chimneyshafts.

The building has a three-room plan, with the main house facing north. The left-hand room has a rear lateral stack, and the central room features an axial stack that backs onto the left room. There's a lobby entrance situated in front of this stack. The right-hand room originally served as a shop and was extended in the late 19th century with a single-storey structure. The building is two storeys high, with various one and two-storey service blocks at the rear.

The front has a regular four-window arrangement, with a recessed window to the right of number 23A. Ground floor windows are sixteen-pane sashes set under low segmental arches; first floor windows are twelve-pane sashes with a four-over-eight pane configuration. A blind window is located on the first floor to the left of centre, directly above the front doorway. The doorway itself contains a six-panel door, protected by a pedimented timber hood supported on shaped brackets. The shop, which is at the right end, has 20th-century windows but retains an old door at its left end, fitted with a flap where the upper section is an open timber trellis. Spear railings are attached to the forecourt. The rear elevation features a roof with three hips and has three sash windows.

The interior has not been inspected.
