Description
Rose Cottage is a small house dating from around 1700, with its roof replaced after a fire in the mid 19th century and some minor modernisation in the 20th century. The building features a weatherboarded timber frame, a brick stack and chimney shaft, and a slate roof.
The cottage has a two-room plan facing west. The unheated service room at the left (north end) still functions as a pantry, while the front section has been divided off to serve as an entrance lobby. The larger room on the right, which was originally the living room and kitchen, has a stack at the right end. The kitchen is now located in a likely secondary outshot at the rear.
The cottage stands two storeys high with attics in the roof space and a lean-to outshot across the back. The exterior includes three ground floor windows and two first floor windows, all of which are 20th century casements without glazing bars. The central ground floor window likely blocks the original front doorway, with the current doorway located at the left end, featuring a 20th century plank door. The roof is gable-ended, and the left gable has a 19th century fixed pane window with tiny rectangular panes.
Inside, the cottage displays plain carpentry details. The main ground floor room has a roughly chamfered axial beam, and a similar beam runs the full length of the first floor. The ground floor includes a large brick fireplace with a plain oak lintel, while the fireplace on the first floor is blocked. The roof was replaced in the 19th century due to the fire.
