Description

Westernhanger is a house that dates back to the 15th century and was altered and extended in the 16th century. It features a timber frame with exposed plaster infill and a plain tiled roof. This Wealden hall house has had its hall infilled and includes a continuous jettied wing. The main part of the house faces the road with four framed bays over two storeys. The central bays are infilled with close studding, while the remaining bays have a panelled frame with tension bracing. The right side has a jetty that returns, while the left end wing is obscured by a 20th-century outshot. The roof is hipped.

The roadside elevation shows the return jettied bay of the Wealden, which has a blocked mullioned window and a three-light wooden casement on the first floor, along with a two-light casement on the ground floor. There is a three-bay continuous jettied extension that is close studded, featuring a moulded bresummer and a gabled roof with a cluster of stacks at the right end, which may have originally served as a smoke bay. Blocked mullioned windows are positioned under the eaves, with two and three-light wooden casements on the first floor and a three-light casement on the ground floor. To the left, there is a rib and stud door set in a four-centred arched opening, with an identical blocked opening to the right, which may have been intended for another door or window.
