Description
The lychgate and walls, located about 25 metres west of Christ Church, were built in 1860, likely designed by architect William Slater. Constructed from sandstone with a stone slate roof, the lychgate features a weathered and moulded plinth and is more of a small building than just a gateway. It has one storey with a gabled roof, a central cross-finial, and an incised cross in the gable. The entrance is arched and double chamfered, with the inner order supported by attached shafts. There are two shouldered window openings on each side. The western roadside entrance has simple spear-headed railed gates, while the eastern entrance features cast and wrought gates adorned with scrolled plant forms with leaf-terminals. Inside, there are side benches with marble or granite colonettes surrounding the windows and a vaulted roof supported by a diaphragm arch on columns. Stone walls extend along the roadside on either side of the lychgate, approximately 5 feet high, stretching about 25 yards to the south and 40 yards to the north towards the adjacent school.
