Description

The Grange is a house located on Goudhurst Grange Lane, dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in 1690 and during the late 19th century. It features a timber-framed and rendered structure topped with a plain tiled roof. The main range consists of five framed bays, with extensive wings at the rear. The house is two storeys tall with an attic, set on a plinth, and has a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a hipped roof that includes gablets and moulded stacks positioned to the centre left, rear right, and rear end right.

On the first floor, there are five 2-light leaded casements with label hoods and bracketed cills, while the ground floor has two casements along with canted bays at both ends. A central gabled porch features an arched and hooded outer doorway leading to a half-glazed door. The return elevations also display bays and casements with labels and bracketed cills. The rear wing has a moulded bressummer, which was originally jettied but is now underbuilt, and a moulded gabled roof.

The house is illustrated in F. Esam's work, "The Manor and Farmhouses of Kent" from around 1906, which depicts the extensive hipped rear wings and a pierced parapet garden terrace at the rear. Esam notes the date of 1690 and mentions exposed oak beams, an oak staircase, carved ceiling joists, and a large fireplace with panelling in the entrance hall, which is taken from Welbeck Askey and is still visible. Although the property is still inhabited, it was reported to be very dilapidated at the time of the survey.
