Description

Kennel Holt Country House Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It likely dates from the late 16th century, with remodelling in the 17th century and further extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries by Leonard White, a merchant. The building is timber-framed, covered in weatherboarding and tile hanging, with some sections rebuilt in brick. It features a plain tile roof with gabled ends and has brick axial and gable end stacks.

The main range is long and consists of three units, with the center said to have been partly rebuilt after suffering bomb damage during the Second World War. There is an extension from the 18th to 19th century at the front of the left end, a 20th-century wing at the rear of the right end, and small 20th-century extensions at the back of the main range. The building is two stories tall and has an asymmetrical southeast front, with a weatherboarded ground floor and a tile-hung first floor. The center, rebuilt in red brick, features a pedimented doorcase. The windows include 1, 2, and 3-light 20th-century casements with leaded panes. The left-hand side has a projecting extension from the 18th to 19th century, with two 12-pane sashes on each floor. At the rear, there is a large 20th-century brick and tile-hung wing on the left with an external stack, along with a two-story 20th-century flat roof extension and a 20-light ovolo moulded window on the first floor to the right.

Inside, the right-hand room and the chamber above feature intersecting beam ceilings. The ground floor has three rolls to each chamfer, while the chamber has stopped chamfers, with both rooms containing brick fireplaces with chamfered timber lintels. There is a close studding partition between the right-hand room and the center room, which is now a stair hall with 20th-century stairs. The left-hand end and the chambers above have chamfered ceiling beams with bar stops, and the chamber features exposed jowled wall-posts. The rear wall of the center part (landing) shows exposed jowled wall-posts and curved tension braces. The roof over the left (southwest) end is a clasped side-purlin type.
