Description
The tomb of A J Beresford-Hope, located about 1 metre south west of Christ Church, is a monument dedicated to A J Beresford-Hope and Mildred Beresford-Hope, who died in 1887 and 1881 respectively. Designed by Carpenter and Ingelow in 1882, the tomb is made of freestone and granite, featuring an iron screen. It has a moulded stone base with two identical moulded granite chests, each topped with bronze inscriptions. The granite screen on the west side includes metal details and consists of two tiers of buttressed and traceried panels adorned with shields and saints, as well as a large central mandorla depicting Christ in majesty. This mandorla is topped with an ogee-shaped head and a rosy cross finial, which features a small painted portrait, possibly of Christ. The rear of the screen displays a medallion relief of Mildred Beresford-Hope as a young early Victorian woman.
