Description

The walls and stable range attached to the south and east of Elphicks date from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th century. The wall surrounding the front garden of Elphicks is made of red brick, approximately 3 feet high, with coping at the front of the house. It returns to the right, ramps up to about 5 feet, and is buttressed with a gateway and fencing leading to the adjacent stable ranges and sheds.

The main block is timber framed, resting on a stone and red brick base, and is weather-boarded with a plain tiled roof. This single-storey hipped building has an open-sided eastern face for cart entries. At the right end, there is a red brick crosswing, with the lower courses laid in English bond and a plain tiled roof. This section is also single-storey, built on a plinth (with some sandstone to the left), featuring a brick dentil eaves cornice beneath a hipped roof. There are stacks at the centre front and projecting at the end left of the principal elevation. The crosswing has a boarded door to the right and a blocked-in doorway to the left, which includes a mounting block with steps. There are two central window openings. Additionally, there is a single-storey 19th-century extension made of red brick with a slate roof and carriage doors that project towards the roadside from this crosswing.
