Description
Elphicks is a house that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, featuring tile-hung return elevations and a red brick base. The roof is plain tiled and the building stands two storeys high with an attic on a plinth. There are stacks located to the centre left and a projecting stack at the end right, with an English bond brick base resting on sandstone blocks. The house has two hipped dormers and three four-light wooden casements on the first floor, along with three five-light casements on the ground floor. The windows to the centre and right are set in stone and red brick bays that are linked by a pentice roof. A central gabled half-timbered porch with a rib and stud door leads up five steps. The left end bay and some of the window arrangements were added in the mid-20th century. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing with single-storey extensions beyond. The site has historical significance, as Alice Sampson, whose memorial is located in the nearby church, signed her will here in 1508.
