Description

The war memorial, located approximately 12 meters south of the porch of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, was built around 1919. It is believed to have been designed by the son of J. Oldrid Scott, the architect of the church. The memorial is made of sandstone and features bronze plaques. It consists of a tall cross with a slender, slightly tapering shaft that has chamfered corners adorned with 4-leaf motifs. At the top, there is a moulded cap with a cross and small fleur-de-lys in the angles. The base of the shaft is supported by small gabled buttresses. The shaft rests on an octagonal pedestal with a chamfered top that is carved with a prayer. The corners of the pedestal have Gothic panels featuring sacred symbols, while the main sides display brass plaques. The east plaque commemorates those who died in the First World War, while the other three plaques list the deceased from the parish along with their rank and regiment. The memorial is set on a three-step plinth.
