Description
The lychgate to St George's Church and the attached churchyard walls are notable structures located in Benenden. The lychgate was likely built around 1862 by David Brandon, while the wall was constructed in 1873 by George Devey. The lychgate features a sandstone base with wooden framing and a tiled gabled roof adorned with cusped bargeboards. Each side of the lychgate has three chamfered posts supported by curved braces, and it includes a tie beam with queen struts. The wooden gates are designed with a quatrefoil pattern. The churchyard wall, which is approximately 3 feet high, is made of sandstone and topped with sandstone coping, as noted in the accounts from 1873.
