Description

The Benenden C.P. Primary School is a late 19th-century school building, constructed around 1873 by George Devey for the Earl of Cranbrook. The school is built of brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and some decorative timber framing, and has a tiled roof. The front range is gabled and features stone coping, kneelers, and a circular window at attic level, along with a four-light mullioned and transomed window at each end. A projecting gable is positioned centrally, containing three mullioned and transomed windows, with a curved central light and console brackets. To the right of this gable are two triple mullioned and transomed casements, and a two-story hipped porch with timber framing to the upper section is situated at the corner. To the left of the gable is a double mullioned and transomed window, and further to the left a large buttress with a timber framed gable feature incorporating a circular window. An L-shaped wing echoes these features, and the building incorporates a matching building from the early 20th century.
