Description
This is a mid-19th century threshing barn located approximately 30 meters north of Nos 1 and 2 Brook Farm Cottages in Capel. The barn is timber-framed and clad with weatherboards, sitting on brick footings, and features a peg-tile roof.
The barn has a south-facing elevation and consists of three bays with central opposing doorways leading to the threshing floor. There are integral outshots at the rear and a return around the left (west) end. The front of the barn has central full-height double doorways that still contain the original plank doors, with smaller doorways on either side. At the rear, there is a lower doorway from the outshot. The roof is half-hipped at both ends.
Inside, the barn is very well-preserved, featuring three bays. The framing includes staggered rails and large curving braces. From the posts beside the main doorways, there are large raking struts extending down the sides of the threshing floor. The left (western) rear bay is filled with slender struts and narrow waney planks nailed across the front, creating a grille effect. The roof is supported by tie-beam trusses with clasped side purlins.
