Description

Lake Cottage is a cottage ornée dating to around 1880, built as part of the landscaping of Somerhill Park. It is constructed of local sandstone ashlar laid in courses, with brick stacks and chimneyshafts, and a peg-tile roof. The cottage faces north, overlooking the drive and a nearby lake. It has an uneven T-plan, with a front block suggesting a three-room layout, including a central entrance hall, although the room to the right appears to be unheated. A one-room-plan kitchen block projects at a right angle to the left of centre, with a gable-end stack. The building is single-storied with attic space in the roof.

The architectural style is Tudor. The front elevation has an irregular three-window arrangement of flat-faced mullion windows with rectangular panes of leaded glass in iron-framed casements. The original plank door with coverstrips, set within a Tudor arch, remains in the doorway located right of centre. A stone porch with a crenellated parapet features a Tudor outer arch. Low parapets run along the eaves, rising over the gable above the doorway and incorporating gabled half-dormers with shaped kneelers, coping, and ball finials. The gables of both the main roof and the kitchen block are similarly detailed. A stone canted bay with a crenellated parapet and a corbelled, moulded base is located at the right (west) end.

The interior has not been inspected. The cottage is attractively sited within the landscaped park and is one of a number of high-quality buildings constructed in the park and on the estate by the Goldsmid family.
