Description
Postern Forge House is an L-shaped building that dates back to the 17th century, with parts from the late 15th century. Originally two cottages, it has been converted into one residence. The house is two storeys high and features four windows, with two window bays located in the south wing, which is short but wide. The ground floor is fronted with red brick, while tiles cover the upper part, although it is likely timber-framed underneath. The roof is tiled, with a half-hipped gable at the east end of the south wing and a smaller pointed gable on the west half. The house has casement windows. It is believed that Thomas Willard, an iron master, built the house around 1480, and it has been associated with the iron trade for many generations. A forge dam is located next to the house, and the interior features a fire ingle nook and some late 17th-century panelling.
