Description

This pair of headstones, located approximately 12 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, dates from the 18th century and 1821 and commemorates members of the Cripps family. Both headstones are upright sandstone slabs. The southern headstone is about 450 millimeters high and features a double curvilinear-shaped head, each side carved with cartouches that may represent symbols of trade. Below the head is a fielded panel inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of William Cripps, although the date is not visible and is likely from the late 18th century. The other headstone stands approximately 1.6 meters high and has a shaped head carved with a somewhat rustic depiction of Judgement Day, surrounded by scrolls. Its inscription begins in Gothic lettering and continues in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, noting the death of Richard Cripps in 1821.
