Description
Corner Cottages is a row of cottages located on Cranbrook Road, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The central pair, Nos. 2 and 3, originally served as a lobby entrance house before being converted into cottages in the 18th century. They were altered and extended around 1880 by either George Devey or T.W. Cotman of Ipswich.
The cottages are primarily constructed of red brick, featuring some grey headers on the ground floor, while the first floor showcases late 19th-century timber framing with an eclectic design that includes diagonal braces and quatrefoil motifs. The building has a tiled roof with three brick chimney stacks, including one external stack on the right side.
This L-shaped structure has two storeys and attics, with a total of five windows. Nos. 2 and 3 feature tall gabled dormers with lattice casements on the ground floor, as well as gabled weather porches. No. 1 has three windows on its side elevation and a gabled dormer. Notably, No. 2 includes a bread oven and a roll-moulded pine beam, along with gunstock jowled posts. Inside, there is an 18th-century winder staircase leading to the attic, which has a through purlin roof without a ridgepiece and retains some old floorboards. The doors are made of planks, and No. 3 has late 16th-century or early 17th-century plank doors. An early 19th-century firegrate is also present.
