Description
South Lodge at Benenden School is a lodge built around 1880 by George Devey for the Cranbrook estate. It is designed in a picturesque style. The ground floor is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoins, while the first floor features a combination of pebbledash and a timber-framed gable with eclectic framing and plastered infill. The roof is tiled and includes two groups of paired brick chimneys. The building has two storeys and displays irregular fenestration.
The front of the lodge has a splayed first floor with a seven-light mullion window and a six-light mullion window on the ground floor, both supported by brackets. On the right side, the first floor gable creates an entrance porch on the ground floor, which is defined by six balustrade-like piers and a plank door. There are also two additional ground floor mullion windows and a brick lean-to section at the rear. The left side features a close-studded timber-framed section with curved bargeboards and a two-light mullion window.
