Description
The Eccles War Memorial Clock Tower is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is constructed of stone and is located on the western edge of the Recreation Ground, overlooking Bull Lane.
The tower is square and features corner pilasters. The main section of the tower is rusticated and has a deep frieze and cornice. The east and west faces include panels with moulded surrounds and hoods, with the east face panel added after the Second World War. Each face of the upper stage has a glass-encased clock face. The tower is topped with a stepped pyramidal roof and a ball-shaped finial, and it stands on a square base surrounded by a small area of paving.
On the west face, there is a relief inscription that reads, "LET US EVER HOLD IN HONOUR THE NAMES OF THE MEN OF ECCLES WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." Below this, the names of the 33 individuals who fell in the First World War are inscribed. The eastern panel states, "LET US EVER HOLD IN HONOUR THE MEN OF ECCLES WHO DIED IN THE WAR OF 1939 – 1945" and lists 10 names.
