Description
The gates and gate piers to the west of Oxon Hoath are a notable group of structures located at the end of the main drive leading to the entrance front of the house. They consist of four 18th-century gate piers, which are said to have originated from the Pre-Fire House of Parliament. Two of these piers are made of ashlar and feature banded rustication along with top cornices. Each is surrounded by pedestals that support globes on brackets, with four globes projecting and a small upper obelisk. The two smaller outer piers have cornices, pyramidal pedestals, and globes. In the center, there are tall iron gates with an over-throw and spearhead railings. The railings beyond the outer piers are believed to be copies of altar rails from various North Italian cathedrals.
Additionally, there are three more sets of wrought iron gates with standards and over-throws located to the west, south, and north of the main gates, which are likely from the 19th century. A particularly ornate set of wrought iron gates, reputedly from Eltham Palace, dates to the later 17th century and is situated to the south of the main gates, leading to the garden at the south of the house. These gates also feature standards and an over-throw.
