Description

St Mary's Abbey Guesthouse is a guesthouse that was originally part of a 14th-century hospice. It was later used for stabling and has undergone alterations and extensions in the early 19th century and early 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoins and stone chip galleting, featuring a deep plinth. The first floor is cement rendered, and the building has a tiled roof with stone chimneystacks.

On the first floor, there is a continuous window with 20 lights and cinquefoil heads, of which 12 are blocked. The ground floor includes three early 19th-century triple windows and two larger windows that were once doorways. The right side elevation has two buttresses and a five-light bay, while a gabled stone porch was added to the right around 1968.

Attached to the right side is a T-wing made of stone rubble with a tiled roof, which is two storeys high and features cambered-headed casements. Inside, the lounge has cross beams, one of which is supported on a stone corbel, a 20th-century Baronial-style stone fireplace, and a stone arch with a wooden curved settle leading to a curved window. Another room also has a similar stone fireplace. Original timbering is reported at the first-floor level in both the walls and roof, but only the ground floor has been seen.
