Description

Bumblebee Barn is a former barn that has been converted into a house, likely dating from the late 16th century, with the conversion taking place in the 1980s. The structure is timber framed and is clad in weatherboarding, resting on a 20th-century ragstone and brick plinth, topped with a renewed half-hipped tile roof.

The former west midstrey, which has a hipped gable, now features a five-light casement window at the first floor level, along with a 20th-century hipped weatherboarded porch set on ragstone footings. The building also includes three hipped dormers with double mullioned windows. On the ground floor, there are two and three-light mullioned casements.

The rear elevation showcases four hipped dormers, four mullioned casements, one half-glazed door, and a patio door on the left side. A former lean-to addition on the north side was removed during the conversion. The barn consists of five bays with jowled posts, a queen post roof, mid rail, and curved tension braces. While many of the upright posts have new bases, there is an inserted flow and a fireplace made from reused timbers. The main posts are original to their upper parts, and the tie beams, queen posts, purlins, and wall plates with tension braces are also original. The joists feature edge halved scarfs with bridled abutments, a technique that, according to Cecil Hewitt, became obsolete around 1650.
