Description

Grove Cottage is a small house dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with blue headers to the ground floor, and tile hanging above, with a peg-tile roof and a brick stack. The house is situated down a track off Powder Mill Lane, facing east, and is linked to a detached barn. The plan consists of two rooms wide, with a kitchen/parlour to the left, heated by a stack at the end, and a service room to the right. A rear outshut is likely integral to the property.

The two-storey facade is almost symmetrical, featuring a 2-window arrangement. A 19th-century plank front door is located slightly to the right of centre, sheltered by a flat porch hood. The left-hand stack projects and has corbelled brick coping and tile-hung offsets. The roof is gabled at the left end, half-hipped at the right end, and extends downwards as a catslide over the outshut. Windows are 19th-century casements with two panes per light, and segmental arched heads; the three windows to the left of the front door are 3-light, while those to the right are 2-light. A return on the right side features a door leading into the outshut and a small window.

The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1988.

Grove Cottage is a good example of a small, traditional house retaining an unspoiled exterior.
