Description

The Methodist Chapel is a Wesleyan chapel dated 1848, with a porch added and the interior refitted in the late 19th century. It is constructed from Kentish ragstone coursed rubble with galleting, brick quoins, and a slate roof. The front features a pedimented gable with a blocked oculus, a central datestone, and two tall round-headed arched windows with paired lancets separated by colonnettes, along with a circular opening above and coloured glass leaded lights. The later 19th-century porch, also made of ragstone, has a stone cornice and slate roof, featuring an open pediment with a similar round-headed window and a door on the right side, which is accessed by five steps. The side elevation includes three similar round-headed windows and a basement with flat-headed windows. The rear elevation has late 19th-century lean-to extensions. The interior of the chapel is complete from the late 19th century, showcasing wooden dado panelling, a wooden gallery with cast iron quatrefoil panels, pews, and a pulpit rostrum with a trefoil-headed back and panelling, along with a scrolled iron prayer rail. The basement retains its original fireplace and cupboards. This chapel is noted for being an externally complete and distinguished example of its period.
